Extensive games with high quality should again take on a higher priority at Square Enix. The Japanese publisher would like to revise its entire development process for this.
In a Meeting financially, Square Enix mentioned a “medium to long-term restructuring” of corporate strategy. The focus is on games that have a certain “global appeal”.
A pipeline is planned that will enable the publisher to release important titles on a regular basis. The entire development process is to be revised in order to be able to offer a higher quality than before.
In addition, Square Enix told investors that they want to stabilize their income. For this project, the company wants to expand the subscriptions for its MMOs. These include the popular “Final Fantasy XIV”, but also mobile and browser games.
The income from this area should enable the publisher to invest more in future “HD games”. This is how Square Enix describes its premium games that appear for consoles and PC.
Ambitious projects in development
The first project to underline the new direction is “Final Fantasy XVI”. The long-awaited action RPG is coming to market in less than six weeks – only for PS5 for now.
In addition, other major titles are in development with “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth” and “Kingdom Hearts 4”. The former is set to come out in winter 2023/24, while the Disney crossover doesn’t have a release date yet.
