Perhaps it was prompted by sanctions from the United States.
The Taiwanese resource DigiTimes yesterday drew attention to the lack of mention of 14-nm and more modern technical processes in the report of the management of the Chinese company SMIC at the last quarterly reporting event, which ended last Friday. Representatives of this largest contract chip manufacturer in China preferred to focus on the growth in demand in the mature lithography segment from compatriot companies, but advanced technologies as such were not discussed.

Moreover, according to eyewitnesses, the mention of the 14nm process technology has also disappeared from the main list of services offered on the SMIC website, although it can still be found in related sections of the website of this Chinese manufacturer. U.S. sanctions since last October have restricted SMIC from gaining access to process equipment for a certain range of 14nm products. It is possible that SMIC now prefers to refrain from advertising its core activities so as not to aggravate its own situation. Last summer, it became known that SMIC had been supplying one of its customers with semiconductor components for about a year, which, in terms of their characteristics, are close to competitors’ 7nm products. The problem is that it will not be possible to transfer this technology to mass production of rather complex chips at economically justified costs.
