What are WhatsApp and Co. actually doing with our data? The Bundeskartellamt has examined widespread messenger and video services for compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation. The result of the sector inquiry: Many services store the personal data of German and European users in the USA.
According to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), data may only be stored if the level of data protection at the storage location is comparable to that in Europe.
The Bundeskartellamt asked a total of 40 services available in Germany what they do with their users’ data. From the answers, the cartel office concluded that at least nine of the services stored data outside the EU. The investigation did not say which services these are.
