Director Quentin Tarantino announced on May 19 the death of Rick Dalton, the character played by Leonardo DiCaprio in Once Upon a Time In Hollywood.
This is a very strange funeral ceremony. On the Twitter account of his podcast The Video Archives, Quentin Tarantino has announced the death of Rick Dalton, the main character of the film Once Upon a Time In Hollywood (2019), at the age of 90. The filmmaker announced to make a commemorative episode, Tuesday, May 23, dedicated to the protagonist played by Leonardo DiCaprio. In it, listeners can listen to Tarantino look back on the fictional actor’s career by showcasing “some of his best roles.” The News Beverly Cinema, which is owned and operated by Tarantino, also expressed condolences, citing “a wonderful comedian.”
A character almost rooted in reality
This isn’t the first time Tarantino has retraced the life of Rick Dalton. The director told podcaster Jeff Goldsmith in 2021 that he had already completed a set of biographies on the fictional actor. “I wrote the book The Movies of Rick Dalton,” he announced, adding, “It’s written as if Rick were real. You know, there’s The Movies of Charles Bronson and The Movies of Anthony Quinn. It’s done the same way, with a synopsis and then some quotes and reviews from the era.” He later referred to a fictional film, The Fireman, starring the actor played by Leonardo DiCaprio and the stuntman Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt). This imaginary film took place ten years after the events of Once Upon a Time In Hollywood and even has the right to a script: “The main character was in the Vietnam War, he became cop. And then he starts seeing this group of cops killing guys, and they’re completely corrupt. They end up killing his partner (…). Then Rick targets these bad cops, he dresses up as a firefighter and burns them all with his flamethrower”. The weapon used is a reference to the 2019 feature film.
Despite having a fictional protagonist, Once Upon a Time In Hollywood has a certain amount of reality to it. The story is set in 1969: star Rick Dalton and his stunt double, Cliff Cooth, struggle to pursue their careers and regain success in film. However, things actually happened. For example, DiCaprio’s neighbors are director Roman Polanski and actress Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie). The film is currently available on Netflix.
