05/24/2023 at 5:30 p.m. by Karsten Scholz – Shortly before the PlayStation Showcase on May 24, 2023, those responsible for Sony held a “Business Segment Meeting”, at which the “Game & Network Services” segment was also discussed . We have summarized the most important findings for you.
On June 23, 2022 there was the Transition from PlayStation Plus, with which the Sony managers certainly wanted to position themselves more competitively in the fight against Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass. PlayStation Plus and Playstation Now became the three PlayStation Plus tariffs Essential (quasi the old PS Plus, for 8.99 euros per month), Extra (offers all the benefits of Essential plus a collection of PS4 and PS5 games, for 13.99 euros per month) and Premium (all the benefits of Essential and Extra plus other benefits, for 16.99 euros per month).

Conclusion after 10 months of PS Plus 2.0
Just before today PlayStation Showcase (May 24, 2023, from 10:00 p.m.) Sony executives held a “Business Segment Meeting” where the “Game & Network Services” segment was also discussed. The first conclusion of the PS Plus conversion after ten months is particularly exciting.
In March 2023 there were 6.1 million extra and 8 million premium subscribers. However, the 14.1 million extra or premium users should only make up 30 percent of the actual PS Plus base. In total, around 47 million PlayStation fans transfer at least around 9 euros to Japan every month.
Editor’s note: Unfortunately, there are no current comparative figures for the Xbox Game Pass. The last water level is from January 2022, with more than 25 million subscribers.
Coming back to PS Plus, subscription renewal rates remained broadly in line with COVID peaks (78 percent). In the 2019 financial year, the renewal rate was 75 percent.

Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, had even more information from the PlayStation cosmos in his luggage for the meeting. Here are the most important findings:
The supply problems surrounding the PS5 launch are a thing of the past, while demand for the console is higher than ever. From January to March 2023 alone, more console units were sold than in any other fourth quarter of a financial year. In all important comparison categories, the PS5 can increase compared to the PlayStation 4, such as the per capita expenditure of the users or the number of monthly active players. Some of the most exciting new releases for Sony in the near future include Spider-Man 2, Wolverine, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Tekken 8, Final Fantasy 16, Street Fighter 6, Crash Team Rumble, Baldur’s Gate 3, Suicide Squad and Silent Hill Townfall. The PlayStation VR2 is reported to have sold approximately 600,000 units in its first six weeks. That is eight percent more devices sold than the previous model in the same launch period.
The report also shows Sony’s future strategy: The takeover of Bungie should pay off primarily in the area of live services, which is to be expanded further in the future via various PlayStation studios – specifically Haven, Naughty Dog , Guerrilla and Firewalk Studios.
A continued strong catalog of single-player experiences should ultimately ensure a diverse first-party portfolio. Major investments are also planned in new franchises, but also in the expansion of existing franchises (e.g. by making films and series for brands such as Gran Turismo, Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us, Twisted Metal, God of War and Horizon). There will be a first glimpse of the future of PlayStation tonight at the showcase event at 10:00 p.m.
