While mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses are still largely the prerogative of professionals, experts or photography enthusiasts, Canon has been looking for a few months to diversify its offer. In addition to boxes geared towards this experienced audience, with the Canon EOS R3, EOS R5 or EOS R6 Mark II, the manufacturer now offers a Canon EOS R8 and an EOS R50. The first allows you to take advantage of a full-frame photo sensor for a more affordable price, while the second is oriented this time towards content creators.
The trend of the Japanese manufacturer is not about to stop and the firm presented, this Wednesday, its most affordable hybrid camera to date, the Canon EOS R100. It is a hybrid camera with interchangeable lens intended above all for family use, in order to record memories of holidays or events.
To do this, the Canon EOS R100 has an APS-C photo sensor in the 22.2 x 12.8 mm format of 24.1 megapixels. However, unlike other Canon cameras, most of which have a Digic X image processor, the EOS R100 simply has a Digic 8 processor, launched in 2018. The performance of the device will logically be much more limited , whether for speed, burst or autofocus.
Limitations for burst or speed
On the speed side, the EOS R100 is satisfied, for example, with a shutter of up to 1/4000 second. The burst is also restrained with up to 3.5 frames per second in autofocus tracking and 6.5 frames per second with the electronic shutter. For comparison, most boxes launched in 2023 allow for at least a 10fps burst. Another limitation on the side of the recognition of subjects for the autofocus which is limited to the faces and eyes of humans, but will not manage animals or vehicles. Finally, regarding the sensitivity of the sensor, the Canon EOS R100 can go up to 12,800 ISO, expandable up to 25,600 ISO.

The video is not left out, since Canon offers recording in 4K 30p (with a crop of 1.55x), in Full HD at 60p or in HD at 120p. However, the box is logically content with recording with the h.264 codec and does not integrate sensor stabilization, but only electronic stabilization.

Regarding ergonomics and connectivity, if the Canon EOS R100 does indeed have an electronic viewfinder, its 3-inch screen is not adjustable or touch sensitive. The case also offers only one adjustment wheel and no customizable button. However, we will find Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity to connect it to the Canon Camera Connect application and the Image.canon cloud service. The EOS R100 is limited to a single SD card drawer (UHS-II compatible), but does offer a micro-HDMI output, a microphone input and a USB-C socket. On the other hand, the USB socket cannot be used to charge the battery, but only to transfer photos.
A 700 euro mirrorless camera with lens
The Canon EOS R100 will only be available as a kit. It will be offered in particular at a price of 699 euros with an RF-S 18-45 mm (f / 4.5-6.3) IS STM lens (29-72 mm equivalent). Of course, the device being equipped with the Canon RF mount, it is compatible with all of the manufacturer’s photo lenses, including the most high-end models.
Speaking of lenses, Canon has announced, alongside its EOS R100, a new RF 28mm f/2.8 STM wide-angle lens in pancake format. This will be offered at a price of 379 euros.
