I’ll stop you there: don’t confuse Samsung Electronics with Samsung Display. If the two companies are in the same group, Samsung Display is a supplier of screens… for companies. Display Week is precisely a meeting of Samsung Display, where the screen specialist reveals each time its most daring innovations, in the great circus of display technologies.
An OLED screen that you literally fold
And this year, it’s safe to say the show lived up to expectations, with the Rollable Flex, an OLED display that, get this, can be extended from 49mm to 254.4mm. Yes, you read that right: a screen that you can stretch like a rubber band, or almost.

Samsung hasn’t been very talkative about the diagonal of this screen. But according to our scholarly calculations, it should be somewhere between 12 and 13 inches. An ideal format for tablets or laptops, according to Samsung, which seems to be already revolutionizing the market with its magic screen. But now, it would be too simple if Samsung gave us all the details the first time. The screen is wrapped around an axis, however it is not known if the mechanism is motorized. Will it have to be unrolled by hand like an old parchment? In any case, it reminds us of LG’s OLED rollable TV or Lenovo’s rollable PC presented at MWC.

Among the other marvels of the Korean house, there is also an OLED screen that can recognize fingerprints anywhere on the screen. As a reminder, current fingerprint sensors only work at a specific location on the screen. And that’s not all: this screen of the future can also measure the user’s pulse and blood pressure. Just put two fingers on the screen, and presto, voila! We can already imagine the potential applications for health. Another highlight was the demonstration of a display with an impressive 240Hz refresh rate.

Last but not least, Samsung also presented a foldable smartphone whose screen can be folded 360 degrees, like a paper doll. But when will we be able to get our hands on these jewels of technology? Samsung remains silent as a carp. Patience is the mother of all virtues, we are told. Now a brand needs to buy these technologies from Samsung Display and integrate them into a marketed product.
