Walt Disney, the current owner of the Star Wars franchise, said he sees huge potential in games after the initial success of EA’s Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
Respawn Entertainment’s 2019 Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order sequel is doing well, with the game quickly becoming the second-biggest UK launch of the year, and the sequel’s UK sales are around 30% higher than its predecessor. Not only did the game perform well in the UK, it also topped Circana/NPD sales in the US last month. Apparently, the success of the game did not go unnoticed, since the owner of Lucasfilm Ltd. Walt Disney and Chairman Josh D’Amaro talked about “excellent” results on the gaming side, mentioning Jedi Survivor, during the annual JP Morgan Show, an event for technology, media and communications investors.
“In terms of games, again with such a strong intellectual property, we are working with the best in class game developers and we are also seeing great results from the gaming side of our business,” the Disney chairman told investors. “We just released a new game called Star Wars Jedi Survivor. I would love to work on these new games when they come out. It has very, very high ratings and is said to be one of the best Star Wars games in 20 years. So this business is going well for us. And I think as the world continues to evolve and we see more gamers spending more time with their consoles and online, we have a huge opportunity here.”
As reported earlier this week, Ubisoft Massive’s upcoming open-world Star Wars game is set to arrive in early 2024.
