The latest Zelda has pushed the limits of the open world even further. Still, there are very precisely 16 minutes and 15 seconds where you won’t have too much fun.
16 minutes and 15 seconds. This is the time you will have to spend in front of your screen doing nothing to unlock the complete map of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Like Zelda: Breath of the Wild, to unlock the map of a region, the player must reach watchtowers. In total, there are about fifteen waiting for you. In this opus, however, the way to activate them is different: you don’t have to climb them but solve small puzzles to succeed in getting inside. A novelty that is welcome for this second visit to Hyrule… but that was without counting on the cutscenes that are impossible to pass.
In Tears of the Kingdom, the watchtowers from below contain a mechanism that propels Link into the air so that he can also scan sky islands in addition to the lands of Hyrule. This “elevator” can be used at will, especially to climb into the clouds, but the first time is different. Metal arms protruding from the ground equip Link with a long cable connected to his Pru’Ha tablet. Once in the air and at the height of our ascent, our protagonist will map the upper and lower levels of the map with the scanner of his device. A cutscene that lasts 1min05.
15 identical cinematics if you want to unlock the map
The first time, the cinematic has a little magical side. Being able to watch Link fly away and admire the expanse of the playing surface available to him is rather exhilarating. The following times, the player is happy to relive this moment. But for the remaining ten times, it’s neither more nor less than an invitation to leave on his phone while the cutscene ends. A cutscene of 65 seconds, multiplied by the 15 watchtowers that make up Hyrule, which gives us a total of 16 minutes and 15 seconds where the player will not touch his controller.
