This functionality is needed by almost everyone, and it is surprising that it has not been in Windows until now.
As we reported earlier this week, support for additional popular archive formats, RAR, 7z, and Tar.gz, will be added to Windows 11 later this year. Now, Microsoft has clarified the information and said that the corresponding update will be applied to the operating system in September. There is no exact date yet, but the narrowing of the “window” is already significant.
Today, in modern operating systems of the Windows family, only the Zip archive format is natively supported. And although it is enough for the vast majority of users and their tasks, the popularity of the RAR and 7z formats among the people is still too high to be neglected.

Note that the application software for working with archives is almost the first third-party software that users install when working with a PC. It is not surprising: in the archives from the manufacturers’ websites, the main device drivers are loaded, as well as a lot of different files that it makes sense to compress in order to reduce their volume when transferred over the Network.
