Singapore esportsman Malcolm Chang Wai Kiat sentenced to 4 months in prison.
The court found the captain of the Team Resurgence team on the online shooter Valorant guilty of deliberately losing the match.
On September 22, 2020, Team Resurgence played games against three other teams in the EPULZE Royal Southeast Asia Cup Tournament. Chang’s team lost the first two matches to teams from Singapore and South Korea, and the last match was against a team from Japan.
Before the last match, Chang’s friend online gamer, 21-year-old Ryan Tan Shearn, suggested that the player merge the match and bet on the loss of his team.
Tan Shearn suggested this scheme because he owed Chang SGD 400 but could not pay it back.
Chang accepted the offer as he believed it was the only way for his friend to return the SG$400 to him.
