These are tumultuous times for Disney. The in-house streaming service is making losses in the high three-digit millions every quarter. Viewers are unsubscribing from Disney Plus in droves. And to save costs, even exclusive series and films are deleted from the platform. The films on the big screen will have to adjust all the more for the media group. But here, too, each of the franchises reveals its own problems.
Disney’s supremacy in cinema is shaky
Avatar, for example, has been incredibly successful, but right now you can only count on one release every two years. Star Wars, on the other hand, is completely idle and has to prove again with the upcoming films that the star saga created by George Lucas is still relevant for the cinema. And what about Marvel at the moment?
Even with the superheroes it rumbles. The makers of Marvel Cinematic Universe face great challenges. Although the Guardians of the Galaxy are currently doing well at the box office, the flop of Ant-Man and the Wasp should be enough warning shot that superhero films produced too quickly and carelessly can annoy the audience and mean financial ruin.
Disney: Difficult times ahead for the MCU?
The biggest question for those responsible at Disney is whether one can completely adapt to new ones in the future actresses and actors sets or tries again and again to comebacks from Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans and Co. However, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently struggling with completely different problems.
The Hollywood Screenwriters Union strike is currently in full swing. So far, well-known productions such as Netflix’s Stranger Things or Marvel’s Blade have been affected. In the fight for better working conditions and more reasonable pay, the strikers are now paralyzing the MCU’s next big project.
After Marvel’s Blade, this Marvel film is also in danger
Marvel’s Thunderbolts is considered one of the MCU’s hopes for the big screen. The “Anti-Avengers” should make a decisive contribution to the successful transition from the old guard to new heroes. Actually, the upcoming potential Marvel blockbuster on July 28, 2024, which will hit theaters about a month before Blade. Both films are supposed to be brilliant Phase 5 completion form. However, due to the strike, this production also came to a standstill.

How things will continue now is highly uncertain. The Writers strike Hollywood’s could drag on for several more weeks and months. Because the individual production steps are closely linked in Hollywood and follow strict schedules, it is not unlikely that there will also be further postponements at Marvel. In the worst case, there is even a risk that a project will be discontinued, although this option is limited to blockbuster productions by Marvel probably not very likely.
