The Little Mermaid grossed at least $10 million in early screenings Thursday, according to Deadline. This is one of the best launches among Disney remakes.
For example, “Aladdin” made $7 million on its first day, while “Cinderella” grossed $2.3 million. At the same time, “Beauty and the Beast” at one time showed a start at $16.3 million.
The Little Mermaid is projected to gross $180 million for its opening weekend. The film is expected to gross around $120 million in the US and Canada, with the rest coming from foreign markets.
This is a very good result. Aladdin made $112 million on its opening weekend, Maleficent 2 and Cinderella grossed $100 million and $74 million respectively.
So far, viewers are evaluating The Little Mermaid very positively: the film has a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics liked the picture less: 68 points out of 100.
