May 26th, 2023 at 8:38 am by Sara Petzold – The series adaptation of The Witcher could have ended after the third season and Henry Cavill’s departure. The creator of the series, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, has now revealed this in an interview.
Although it has been many months since Henry Cavill left Netflix’s The Witcher in October 2022, new details are still emerging about the decision, which caused a great deal of tremor within the fandom. The main person responsible for the series at Netflix, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, admitted in an interview with the editors of Total Film that there was also the option of canceling the series.
Lauren Schmidt Hissrich: “Too many stories not yet told”
However, one had the feeling that “too many stories remained untold”. So instead of letting the show end with the third season, it was decided to cast Liam Hemsworth as Cavill’s replacement in the role of Geralt. The second alternative at the end of the show, simply letting the witcher Geralt rest and focusing on another character from the witcher cosmos, was not an option according to Hissrich:
“If we had replaced Geralt with another witcher then we would have moved completely away from the books and I don’t think anyone wanted that either. [….] We’re all looking forward to Liam. […] He has huge shoes to fill, but he has a lot of energy and is really looking forward to the role. It is of course a completely new chapter for us. And there are a lot of emotions involved. But ultimately we love what we do. So let’s move on.”
Before viewers can even see Liam Hemsworth in action as Geralt, they can look forward to the release of Season 3 of The Witcher – including Henry Cavill. The first few episodes of the new season will be released on Netflix on June 29, 2023, followed by the second half on July 27, 2023.
