Producer Naoki Yoshida revealed that Final Fantasy 16 was originally planned for the PlayStation 4 as well. Square-Enix worked on this version up until a certain point, but eventually abandoned it, preferring to focus solely on the PS5.
The development team realized that it would take at least 1-2 years of further work to achieve a “product to be proud of” on older generation consoles from a technical standpoint. Square-Enix decided that waiting even longer to be able to release Final Fantasy XVI simultaneously on PS5 and PS4 was not the best option.
