According to a series of random numbers in the Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 gameplay trailer, the game could release on November 20, 2023. Although the trailer for Spider-Man 2 was the highlight of the recent PlayStation Showcase, many were puzzled when the trailer ended with a wide fall 2023 release date instead of a specific release date, especially since fall is just around the corner.
This raised some concerns that the release might be delayed until 2024, but the release date has always been a topic of discussion. Previously, the actor who voices Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has said that marketing will begin in August, with a release date set for September. It’s entirely possible that this was true or not true at the time, but assuming that’s the case, it wouldn’t be surprising that either Sony or Insomniac pushed back the release date by a couple of extra months. After all, November is shopping season and often a busy time for new video game releases.
In any case, this sequence of numbers was first noticed by AndyReloads. In the trailer, when Peter lands on the armored vehicle and looks inside, 201123 is very faintly visible. This easily translates to November 20, 2023, but it raises more questions than potential answers. First, it’s strange to hide a game’s release date in a trailer, especially if Sony was planning a more elaborate marketing tactic. The relevant fragment of the video is located approximately at the 1:20 mark below:
Secondly, since the Insomniac Games studios are located in North Carolina and California, it would be strange if the hidden release date was in a non-US format, where the number comes first and the month comes second. Of course, there may be a simple explanation for this, but it’s still strange. At the same time, most video games come out on Tuesday or Friday, and November 20th is Monday. It’s another area to pull the plug on since God of War Ragnarok came out on Monday, but it’s an interesting sequence nonetheless with a lot of potential caveats.
