The similarities to “Call of Duty” and “Destiny” in particular are more than obvious in the debut work from Ascendant Studios. The young US developer combines the philosophy of his role models with spectacular magic like in the classic “Dark Messiah of Might and Magic”. That sounds pretty good, but does the magic shooter also ignite in practice? We played “Immortals of Aveum” extensively for you at the Electronic Arts headquarters.
According to singer Scott McKenzie, when visiting San Francisco, make sure you wear flowers in your hair. But we didn’t travel near the “City by the Bay” for you to correspond to some hippie clichés of the 1960s, but to shoot the magic shooter “Immortals of Aveum” in the Electronic Arts headquarters near San Francisco play for several hours. Because while we were only able to fall back on an online presentation that was not very meaningful for our last preview report, we were finally allowed to take the gamepad into our own hands. In the following, you will find out why we are so keen to continue playing the first-person action, but why you should not count on a high-flyer.
Jak, the savior of the world
We don’t really have to say too many words about the story of “Immortals of Aveum”. You play Jak, whose parents were forcibly taken from him as a child. As a result, the so-called Immortals, people endowed with great magical powers, take you under their wing and train you to become one of them. Of course, Jak is a very special case, because only he can save the world from the impending downfall for which Sandrakk, his parents’ murderer, is responsible.
How much narrative depth that has in the end is difficult to assess at the moment. However, expect that the story will be more in the direction of “quite okay”, so it won’t be anything particularly bad, but probably nothing particularly memorable either. But you don’t have to do without a certain amount of star power. Among other things, the US actress Gina Torres, known from the Netflix series “Suits”, is represented in a high-quality digitized form in a central role. As General Kirkan, she is your trainer and is already at your side in the tutorial-like prologue. The character played by Torres, the main adversary Sandrakk or the other Immortals like the female muscle mountain Zendara don’t tear us off our feet. But accusing the game of being narratively monotonous would be pointless, as most games struggle with similar problems.
