After lengthy discussions at a government meeting on May 30, a decision was made to increase the electricity tariff for the population. The tariff will be almost doubled to UAH 2.64 per kWh. The new tariff will take effect from June 1. It is reported by Interfax-Ukraine.
“(Minister of Energy Herman, – ed.) Galushchenko urgently introduced a resolution on raising electricity tariffs for the population. Now 2 UAH 64 kopecks. The decision was supported by the government. It should start working from June 1, ”an informed source in the government said.
It should be noted that earlier NEURC proposed to increase the electricity tariff for household consumers from June 1 from the current UAH 1.44-1.68 to UAH 2.88 per kWh (including VAT). At the same time, the regulator clarified that the tariff increase from June 1 is only the first stage of the “price correction”. Consequently, Ukrainians should expect further increases in electricity tariffs.
Previously, the government explained the need to increase electricity tariffs for the population by the fact that the current level does not cover the cost of oblenergo services. There were also reports of the need to rebuild the power grid after massive Russian shelling and destruction.
Recall that last year a law was adopted providing for the introduction of a moratorium on raising tariffs for heating and hot water during martial law and 6 months after its termination. However, it does not apply to electricity tariffs.
The last time electricity tariffs were adjusted was in 2021. First, from January 1, 2021, the Cabinet of Ministers canceled the preferential electricity tariff for the population for the first 100 kWh, which was UAH 0.9 per kWh, and introduced a single market price of UAH 1.68 per kWh. From October 1, 2021, the price of electricity for the population has been adjusted – from UAH 1.68 to UAH 1.44 per kWh, subject to consumption of up to 250 kWh per month. For those who used more than 250 kWh, the tariff remained UAH 1.68.
