According to Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, Arkane hired the developers for Redfall without telling them it was a multiplayer game, as the game hadn’t been announced at the time of the hire and they didn’t want to disclose it in the work requests. According to Schreier, this has become one of the defining factors in the development of the game and points to it as one of the big problems in the industry.
Here is what a Bloomberg journalist writes about this in an excerpt from his article, which is devoted to the difficulties that Redfall faced during its creation.
Recruitment has become a difficult task. ZeniMax’s reputation in the industry was below average, and persuading game developers to move to Texas was difficult due to the state’s conservative social policies. Since Redfall had not yet been announced, the studio was unable to communicate its details to employees seeking employment, exacerbating staffing issues, according to sources close to the project. Arkane wanted to hire staff with multiplayer shooter experience, but the people who applied were determined and wanted to work on exciting single-player sims.
Recall that earlier, also with reference to Schreier, it was reported that one of the main problems that Redfall had to face during development was the loss of employees. By the end of development, up to 70% of those who worked on Prey at Arkane Austin left the studio. The new report makes things worse, as it says that in addition to the fact that the staff was too small, they were not qualified enough to work on multiplayer shooters, as they had experience in a completely different genre.
Redfall has been voted the worst game in Arkane Austin’s history. The Texas-based studio is currently working on technical improvements and a patch that adds a 60fps performance mode.
