Russian media report that books in the Russian Federation have risen in price by 15-20% over the year, and by the end of 2023 their prices will increase by another 15%. This was initially reported in the Russian Book Union and publishing houses. The reasons for the rise in price are quite expected: an increase in the cost of printing materials due to changed supply chains.
“A combination of factors — paper shortages, changes in the exchange rate — has led to the fact that during the past year the cost of book production increased by 30%. Market representatives held back retail prices, but still their growth amounted to about 15–20%, ”said Oleg Novikov, president of the Eksmo-AST publishing group, in an interview with Russian media.
Rosstat experts have disclosed a more restrained assessment of the growth in book prices: in April 2023, compared to the same period last year, the growth was 7.4%, but we are talking only about fiction.
The RCC believes that by the end of this year, the rise in price of books may be 10-15%, since in the 1st quarter the cost increased by 5%. Representatives of large bookstores also confirmed that since the beginning of the year, book prices have grown by 5-6%. In general, representatives of large networks are waiting for a rise in price by 10-15%, both for hardcover editions and for paperback goods. In the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the request of individual media about the increase in the price of books was forwarded to the Ministry of Digital Development. They noted that they are closely monitoring the situation on the book market.

“In 2022, an interdepartmental working group was formed to monitor and promptly make decisions to prevent unjustified growth in paper prices. It included representatives of the Federal Antimonopoly Service, the Ministry of Digital Transformation and the Ministry of Industry and Trade. This made it possible to keep the cost of paper of scarce grades at a level not exceeding inflation,” the press service of the Ministry of Digital Development said.
