As announced shortly after the official announcement, “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2” will be much darker than its two predecessors. According to the responsible developers of Insomniac Games, the humor of the series should not be neglected despite everything.
Shortly after the official announcement of “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2”, the developers of Insomniac Games pointed out that the title will be much darker compared to its two predecessors. An incident that can be traced back to the story of the sequel as well as characters like Venom or Kraven.
According to Creative Director Bryan Intihar, anyone who fears that the humor of the predecessors will be left behind due to the dark undertone can remain relaxed. According to Intihar, the dark direction is all about treating characters like Venom and Kraven with the respect they deserve. However, this does not mean that the familiar humor of the series is dispensed with.
“It’s about finding the balance between the darker themes and characters while telling a human story that has a lot of heart and humor in it… I think that was tricky. But I think in the end we found that nice balance.”
The creative team behind Spider-Man and Rift Apart
“We have moments with Ganke and Miles and the falcon flying after him – the Talon drone – and then at the very end you get this line about Peter changing and Miles going, ‘You know, he’s otherwise never like that’. So we have these human elements, both on the more serious side, where we see the symbiote affecting Peter, and on the lighter side.”
Intihar went on to say that the narrative team for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will be led by Jon Paquette and Benjamin Arfmann, who previously held those roles on Marvel’s Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. “You’re doing a great job,” added the creative director.
“It’s really very difficult. But we owe that to the players. We owe it to them to balance those darker themes with the symbiote and Kraven and Venom and maybe others. But you know, it’s also about making people laugh.”
