Formally, the M2 Ultra is two M2 Max crystals interconnected using the UltraFusion architecture. The chip provides an interprocessor bus with a bandwidth of 2.5 TB / s. Apple claims that this is the most powerful processor used in a personal computer. The novelty is produced using a 5-nm process technology. The processor has 134 billion transistors, which is 20 billion more than the M1 Ultra.
The M2 Ultra includes 24 cores (16 performance and 8 energy efficient). The new processor delivers 20% faster performance than the M1 Ultra, which has 16 powerful and 4 energy efficient cores.
The new chip also offers up to 76 graphics cores. The maximum amount of unified memory supported by the M2 Ultra reaches 192 GB, and the graphics core built into the processor can use all this volume. The memory bandwidth has increased by 50% compared to the M1 Ultra and is 800 GB / s. Graphics performance is up to 30% faster than the M1 Ultra chip, according to Apple. Recall that the latter offers up to 64 cores of the integrated GPU and up to 128 GB of RAM. The new M2 Ultra also features a 32-core AI accelerator with a 40% increase in performance.
The company notes that the 24-core M2 Ultra is up to 50% faster in video processing tasks in DaVinci Resolve compared to the M1 Ultra. In turn, rendering 3D effects with Octane on Mac Studio with M2 Ultra is up to three times faster than in Mac Studio with M1 Ultra.
