Doug Cockle, the English voice of Geralt of Rivia in the Witcher games, has announced that he has prostate cancer. A little over a decade before Henry Cavill brought Geralt to life in Netflix’s The Witcher, Doug Cockle voiced a monster slayer in CD Projekt Red’s three main Witcher video game series. In addition to Geralt, Cockle has starred in television shows such as Band of Brothers, was an extra in Captain America: The First Avenger, and voiced characters in games such as Terminator: Resistance and Ghost Recon: Breakpoint.
However, it was his memorable performance as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher that made Doug Cockle famous among gamers. His work in all three games has been highly acclaimed, and he even received a Golden Joystick Award for his performance in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in 2015. Naturally, many fans hope that Cockle will return to his role in the upcoming remake of the first Witcher game, but he admitted that he doesn’t know much about the project and that the game will simply reuse his lines from the 2007 original.
Doug Cockle toldthat the cancer was discovered during a routine examination and that treatment is still ongoing. He reassured fans that so far, treatment is going well, while stressing that men over 50 need regular screening for prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in men, and about one in nine men in the US will be diagnosed with it during their lifetime. To make matters worse, early-stage prostate cancer has no symptoms, making regular screenings even more important for those at risk. In the meantime, following the announcement of his illness, Cockle received a wave of support from fans of The Witcher games, with many expressing sympathy and wishing him a speedy recovery. We hope that Cockle will be able to fully recover from prostate cancer, and his story will encourage more people to get regularly screened for this and similar types of cancer.
