The movie Gran Turismo has been talked about for quite a while – almost ten years! – and it took quite a while before it actually materialized. In order to prepare for the release, Sony Pictures Entertainment has just teased a key element of video games, transposed into the adaptation.
From the joystick to the steering wheel
It’s not easy to adapt the Gran Turismo franchise to the cinema when the video games themselves are not based on any scenario: Sony therefore left to dig into a rather fascinating true story, that of Jann Mardenborough, a Gran Turismo player turned pilot in real life.
It is indeed after having won an international competition on Gran Turismo 5 on the young player, passionate about cars since his childhood, was finally hired by Nissan to race on the tracks! A real success story that even led him to the 24 Hours of Le Mans for several years in a row.
It is therefore this frame that will serve as a common thread for the film Gran Turismo, directed by Neill Blomkamp (Discrict 9, Chappie, Elysium) and where the role of Jann Mardenborough will be played by Archie Madekwe. Kazunori Yamauchi, creator of Gran Turismo and head of Polyphony Digital, will also be one of the executive producers of the film alongside Hermen Hulst (the number 1 of PlayStation Studios).
Return Permits!
While waiting for the cinema release, Sony is therefore accelerating communication around the feature film and has just unveiled a new clip, showing off a scene with… Zach LaVine! If his name means nothing to you, know that he is a famous basketball player belonging to the Bulls of Chicago, former winner of the Slam Dunk Contest in 2015 and 2016.
It will therefore complete a cast of stars since will also be on the bill David Harbor (who can also be seen in the video), Orlando Bloom or even Djimon Hounsou.
Also and above all, the scene broadcast here has fun repeating the mythical license tests, which all Gran Turismo players know only too well. Bypassing blocks, braking in the allotted time, overtaking an opponent on a precise curve, learning to turn in the rain: so many challenges that are sometimes tricky, but typical of Polyphony titles… which will also be present in the film adaptation. A nice wink.
The cinema release is scheduled for August 9 in France.
