News game History, origin… we take stock of the Sand Land video game, Toriyama’s baby (Dragon Ball)

Inspired by an unknown work by Akira Toriyama, the Sand Land video game was made official during the Summer Game Fest presented by Geoff Keighley. Today, we take stock of the few details we have on this project which should appeal to many Action-RPG enthusiasts.

Sandland, what is it?
The Sand Land intellectual property has existed for over 20 years. Indeed, Akira Toriyama’s manga was released in the early 2000s in Weekly Shōnen Jump. Drawn by Toriyama, this one shot work is clearly not the best known of the famous author. Despite its relatively confidential release, Bandai Namco announced in 2022 a project to adapt the manga into an animated film. It should be released in August 2023. The publisher also took advantage of the Summer Game Fest to announce a video game based on the adventures of Belzebub, the hero.
Who is Akira Toriyama?
The famous mangaka is best known for his work on Dragon Ball, of which he was the author and designer, but he participated in many works, such as Dr Slump, Cowa! Or even Najika. Toriyama is also known to us for his involvement in various video games. He is involved in Dragon Quest and imagined the characters of Chrono Trigger, Tobal (1 and 2) and Blue Dragon (which will be adapted into an animated series).

Sans Land focuses on the character of Belzebub, the prince of demons, and his association with Lao, the human sheriff of a small town. Together, they embark on an epic search for Ghost Lake, hidden somewhere in a desert where resources are scarce. Because in the world of Sand Land, the river that allowed the world to live normally has dried up. This sad event benefits the king of the region who sells the liquid at a gold price. Finding a new source of water would allow humans and demons to live normally again.
What is the gameplay of the game?
Sand Land will be an open-world action-RPG. According to Bandai Namco, the player will have to use “his intelligence, his muscles and his vehicles” to save Sand Land. Big deal ! Regarding the game mechanics, no details have filtered for the moment. Although nothing has been officially announced, Belzebub should be able to use his telekinetic powers as well as his excessive strength. According to the trailer, the fine team should meet a whole bunch of characters with a strong character. Several vehicles will be there, they range from the destructive tank to the robot with devastating power.
Where and when will the Sand Land video game be released?
As of this writing, Sand Land does not yet have a release date. It could be that the game arrives in the course of the year 2024. The software is planned for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC.
