I don’t think anyone needs to be convinced of how much video games have changed since the 1990s. If anyone is in need of enlightenment, comparing the cinematic interludes from Final Fantasy VII Rebirth with cutscenes from the original is a perfect illustration of technological progress over the past 26 years. The comparison was prepared by the user Cycu1.
When Final Fantasy VII debuted in 1997, it was a major milestone for the series. After a very successful “six” series finally abandoned two-dimensional graphics in favor of three-dimensional. It was all the more fitting that FFVII also marked the debut of “Final Fantasy” on a new generation of consoles: the first PlayStation.
To this day, Final Fantasy 7 enjoys a cult status, and in some respects it’s a superb work. However, it’s hard to expect anyone to be impressed with the game’s visuals after so many years, at least technically.
Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth will debut in early 2024 exclusively on the PlayStation 5. By the way, the game will be released on two Blu-ray discs, much like the good old Final Fantasy 7 (which came out on three CDs).
