06/19/2023 at 11:30 a.m. by Karsten Scholz – At Captain Picard Day on June 16, 2023, those responsible at Nimble Giant Entertainment and Paradox Interactive showed gameplay for the newly announced 4X global strategy game Star Trek: Infinite for the first time. Anyone who has played Stellaris should have discovered some similarities.
On June 9, 2023 we reported on the unexpected announcement of the 4X strategy game Star Trek: Infinite. Unexpected because it’s just been way too long since anyone tried to make a really good Star Trek game. The 4X grand strategy game is currently in development at Nimble Giant Entertainment, backed by the grand strategy professionals at Paradox Interactive. At the time, however, there was only a short teaser trailer to see. The gameplay reveal then followed on Captain Picard Day on June 16, 2023.

Stellaris: The Next Generation
In Star Trek: Infinite you choose at the beginning of a game between the United Federation of Planets, the Klingon Empire, the Romulan Star Empire or the Cardassian Union. Your goal is to lead your chosen faction to victory and prosperity through the four pillars of the 4X genre: explore, expand, exploit and exterminate.

Iconic characters such as Picard, Janeway, Sisko, Data, Gowron, Makbar and Garak are said to be available to the respective factions as recruitable officers. In addition, according to the developers, a wide range of ships awaits you, from the Defiant class of the Federation to the menacing Cardassian ships of the Galor class to the sleek Romulan D’deridex or the impressive Klingon Negh’Var battleships.

Nimble Giant Entertainment and Paradox Interactive announced a 4X strategy game for the Star Trek universe with a teaser trailer at the Summer Game Fest. The gameplay scenes shown indicate that the Paradox hit Stellaris should serve as a blueprint for the developers of Nimble Giant for their new Star Trek game. Many interface elements and systems are strongly reminiscent of the space strategy game from 2016. And indeed, the newly published Steam product page states: “Star Trek: Infinite builds on the foundation of Stellaris, takes advantage of the deep and complex system and makes it its own Aspects of these systems have been streamlined and simplified to better align with the Star Trek franchise.”
