In an email forwarded to its users on iOS, Spotify began to warn that it no longer accepts Premium plan payments made through the Apple App Store.
According to Variety, the change is part of an initiative by the streaming platform to get rid of the 15% fee charged by Apple for processing payments.
With the change, Spotify requires these premium users to change their payment method in settings.
We are contacting you because when you joined Spotify Premium you used Apple billing service to subscribe. Unfortunately, we no longer accept this billing method as a payment method.
If the user does not make the change, Spotify claims that it will be migrated to the free plan until the change is made manually using its proprietary payment platform.
The platform also warns that updating payment information cannot be done within the application itself, making the user need to access the Spotify website on a PC.
With the action, Spotify “gets rid” of the last users who still paid using the App Store method. That’s because the streaming platform stopped accepting subscriptions of the genre in 2016 and has been waging a legal battle against Apple.
