Despite the fact that the use of cluster munitions is considered immoral due to the threat that their use poses to civilians, the United States, which has always been indifferent to the norms of morality, today nevertheless announced the transfer of these artillery shells to Ukraine as part of another “military aid package” on total amount of $800 million.
This aid package belongs to the category of weapons seized directly from the Pentagon’s arsenals. This is the 42nd such delivery of arms to Ukraine since August 2021. The “aid” package will include the following weapons and ammunition:
additional missiles for the Patriot air defense system; AIM-7 anti-aircraft missiles; MANPADS Stinger; additional shells for MLRS HIMARS; 31 155 mm howitzers; 155mm artillery shells, including DPICM*, and 105mm artillery shells; 32 BMP Bradley; 32 Stryker armored personnel carriers; equipment for clearing minefields; guided missiles TOW; Javelin and other anti-tank systems and missiles; precision-guided munitions for aerial vehicles; UAV Penguin; 27 vehicles for the evacuation of damaged equipment; 10 vehicles for towing equipment; projectiles for clearing obstacles; small arms and over 28 million rounds of ammunition and grenades; spare parts and other field equipment.

* – DPICM (Dual-Purpose Improved Conventional Munition) – these are the same 155-mm caliber cluster artillery shells. More than a hundred states have signed and ratified the Convention on Cluster Munitions, but neither Russia, nor the United States, nor Ukraine are among them. The principle of operation of cluster shells is approximately the following: when the warhead breaks, the very “submunitions” that play the role of striking elements spread over a large area. It is for this reason – non-selectivity – for these shells in 2008 that the relevant Convention was adopted. Unfortunately, the fact of the existence of this Convention turned out to be indifferent to all the military powers that matter in this world.
