Titanic, released in 1997, is still in the top 5 greatest hits of all time, and the recent drama has given the film and many documentaries about the famous ocean liner a huge boost. 26 years later, some players continue to benefit from this immense success.
Titanic, a monument of cinema and a mythical wreck
Equipped with a budget the 200 million the dollarsTitanic was an opportunity to highlight the history of the ocean liner, which sank in 1912 and was only found in 1985. Since then, many dives have made it possible to learn much more about the ship, to bring up objects, and above all to digitize the remains.
Unfortunately, the Titanic is currently eaten away by a species of bacteria perfectly adapted to the depths, and it is thought that the wreck could to have completely disappeared within ten years. Either way, the film brought to life one of the ships most ahead of its time, telling the fictional story of Jack and Rose among characters who actually walked the decks and corridors of the Titanic. Obviously, the shipwreck is an integral part of the story, and we know that James Cameron paid great attention to detailto the point of digitally modifying the starry sky in the 3D version, because it was inaccurate.
At the time, releasing a film with such a budget represented a big risk, but the immediate and continuous success quickly reassured everyone. The film made $2.2 billion at the box office, definitively launching the careers of many actors and properly filling a number of bank accounts.

Seven words to finance studies
But beyond the stars and supporting roles, several actors continue to receive checks, although they only had small roles. This is particularly the case of Reece Thompson, who played the “little Irish boy” accompanying his parents to third class. 5 year old boy does not appear for a few seconds on the screen but was still entitled to a line of text and participates in one of the most moving scenes of the feature film. Now 30 years old and marketing director of a ski resort, he was interviewed in 2017 by the famous magazine Cosmopolitan. This interview recently resurfaced and allows us to learn (or remember, depending), that he still receives royalties thanks to the release of new editions or reruns.
I still get them from time to time, but they’re nowhere near as important as they were when the movie came out. (…) Much of that money has been used over the years to pay for college, cars, and other things I needed. I would say it was around $30,000.
Reece Thompson didn’t win crazy sums of money, but those relatively big early regular checks did. enabled him to finance his studies. A welcome boost due to the fact that any actor who utters even a word must receive royalties. By having for all text “What are we doing, mom?”, the young actor has secured a few tens of thousands of dollars, carefully set aside by his parents until he can dispose of them. Titanic is available on SVOD on Disney+.
