It was a year ago that the NOS HUB 5G was launched. During the anniversary, the operator took the opportunity to launch the Test Bed 5G & Digital Transformation. This consortium plans to support, within three years, the development of up to 165 5G pilots.
Thus, innovative products or services will be developed that use next-generation connectivity in key areas of the Portuguese economy and society: Industry, Retail, Health, and Smart Cities and Sustainability. The co-promoters plan to invest around eight million euros.
“This project aims to support start-ups and SMEs in the development of 5G products and services, fostering their digital transformation and helping them, in their innovation cycles, to transform their technology into commercially viable solutions”, explains the US in a statement.
NOS Hub 5G was the space for the dissemination of 38 5G use cases in the space of one year
Launched in July 2022, the NOS Hub 5G has already been the dissemination space for 38 5G use cases. Among others, smart city platforms stand out such as smart parking, traffic analysis, waste management or smart lighting, even telehealth applications, products for the remote assistance industry with augmented reality or immersive experiences for tourism.
This has the mission of being a space for ideation, experimentation and technological transformation. It should be noted that the Hub was visited by around 260 companies, and was also the stage for training in innovation, in partnership with Nova SBE.
The development of 5G is a strategic vector for NOS, representing an investment of around 420 million euros so far. This foresees an investment of over 110 million euros in the coming years, having the largest 5G coverage in the country.
To this end, it claims to have more than four thousand base stations, with a coverage of over 90% of the Portuguese population. In addition, NOS is one of the Portuguese companies with the highest investment in R&D and patent applications in 2022.
Among these projects, Test Bed 5G & Digital Transformation stands out, presented in recent days, and which is part of the National Network of Test Beds. “The NOS HUB 5G was undoubtedly an important step along this path, but we want to continue down this path with a series of new innovation projects such as Test Bed 5G”, says Manuel Ramalho Eanes, Director of NOS.
