Made to crush everything
As everyone knows, Avatar first of the name exploded when it was released in 2009 : technical slap, atmospheric slap, auditory slap… This is a mega blockbuster still first at the world box office with 2.929 billion dollars. A simply insolent score.
With its sequelAvatar The Way of the Water, James Cameron obviously intended to beat this record : he notably waited for years for the technology to be sufficiently advanced and to his liking, in order to best transcribe water and all its effects. The feature film finally ended its run at $2.32 billion at the box office, which is still quite far from the first film, but still extremely high. This makes it the third most profitable work (between the two Avatars is Avengers: Endgame with 2.797 billion dollars).

We remember the little story: before making the first Avatar, James Cameron absolutely wanted Matt Damon in the title role. Role he turned down, then sitting down on a juicy contract where he could have gotten 10% of the film’s takings (and that’s a LOT, believe us). Instead, the filmmaker turned to then-unknown actor Sam Worthington to play Jake Sully.
In Avatar the Waterway, Sully is back, still played by Sam Worthington. The irony is that he only does the motion-capture of his Na’vi character, also lending his voice… but his real face does not appear at all. Which did not prevent him from receiving more than 100 million dollars to re-stack in the film.
You read correctly : Sam Worthington got $110 million to star in Avatar 2. Specifically, his fee was $10 million, plus 5% of box office revenue, as his contract stipulated.
When we know that Avatar 3, 4 and 5 are already planned and that they even have a release date, we dare to imagine the future contracts of the actor, unless they are already signed.
