Meta seems to be preparing a major new function for WhatsApp: the possibility of generating stickers by AI. Many mysteries still surround the feature.

Slowly, but surely, Meta is stepping into the realm of AI. The firm has been working on the subject in its labs for many months, but we now find marks in the group’s products. In June, we detailed the firm’s ambitions with Instagram and Messenger, but it is WhatsApp that could serve as a testing ground.
As the specialized site WABetaInfo reports, the beta version 2.23.17.14 of the WhatsApp application for Android includes a new function for a very limited group of users: AI sticker generation.
Create a sticker in a few words
The idea is quite simple. In addition to emojis and GIFs, you could share stickers with your loved ones from a selection. With this update, it becomes possible to generate a sticker by describing it in a few words. The application gives the following example: “a laughing cat on a skateboard”.

Unfortunately we lack a lot of details about this novelty. For example, we do not know the language model used for this product. Is this a GPT based tool? Or rather MidJourney? Or Llama 2, the new model developed by Meta, Microsoft and Qualcomm?
Regarding problems related to sticker generation, Meta offers a button to report them and thus try to improve the tool. AI-created stickers would also be more easily identifiable from WABetaInfo, to avoid creating confusion.
The idea is reminiscent of what Google offers with its Gboard keyboard, which allows you to create emojis by merging two options that already exist in the keyboard. Here, it was not a question of AI, but simply of giving more means of expression to our conversations to illustrate what the written word does not always manage to convey well.
