On their own, the Indiana Jones and Mission: Impossible licenses have a name that is more than a seller, and yet! Currently, the two new franchise installments aren’t the highest-grossing summer blockbusters of 2023. could be salty as the two behemoths are struggling to generate large profits.
The box office has chosen its two victims, it will be Indiana Jones and Ethan Hunt
Is 2023 a bad year for blockbusters? Not everyone is in the same boat – as the cheeky numbers from Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie show – because, for some, the box office drop is tough, really tough. Today, there are a few productions, from very large film licenses, which break the figure and which give reason to the warnings uttered by filmmaker Steven Spielbergten years ago… Like what, granting yourself sacred headliners and surfing on nostalgia, it does not particularly cause the jackpot at the box office!
Admittedly, the dark rooms experienced a summer period of the most spectacular in terms of box office but, for some, the climate is much more gloomy than sunny. In the lot, our viewfinder targets in particular the fifth installment of the Indiana Jones saga (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) and the seventh installment of the adventures of the tireless Ethan Hunt from the Mission: Impossible license. After a few weeks of operation, it was time to draw up an initial assessment, and we are more on a mountain of dollars thrown out the window than on an avalanche of pocketed greenbacks…
Marketing that is expensive… and that does not succeed: blockbusters are struggling
Thinking of enjoying a well-deserved retirement, thanks in particular to the splendid work of Steven Spielberg on the original trilogy, this good old Indy had in mind to restore his image after a vigorously criticized fourth part… In vain! Despite the support of a few avid viewers, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny did struggle to attract audiences. Admittedly, the film pays for itself but we are (very) far from triumph: 300 million dollars invested for 375 million worldwide box office receipts… And again, we do not take into account the marketing budget! On the side of Tom Cruise, we are not being clever either, even if he is the one who is doing the best of the two.
After having stunned us thanks to a sixth high-flying adventure, Tom Cruise does not transform the test of MI: Fallout with Dead Reckoning Part.I. Despite the bankable side of its headliner, the new Mission: Impossible brings “only” $ 523 million at the box office (it would have to reach 600 to break even), where it cost 291, not including marketing. For the two films mentioned, it is estimated that it was necessary to at least 100 million more on the table for communication and we cannot say, with hindsight, that it paid off. In normal times and as our colleagues from Variety point out, it is assumed that this type of production must generate, at a minimum, profits of the order of 100 million dollars. Nevertheless, as good adventurers, Tom Cruise and Harrison Ford did not achieve this big jump in the box office without a parachute to limit the breakage, and this one is none other than the use of SVOD and the signing of any other broadcasting agreement. For the moment, the observation does not take into account these elements which, in the medium/long term, could be life-saving in terms of profits. For the moment, it’s not a party, of course, but all is not lost: we will just have to be patient.
