James Cameron is a filmmaker who has largely proven himself, but not the first time. He started his career with this nanar rated 5%.
With a rating of 5% on Rotten Tomatoes, we can consider “Piranha II: The Spawning” as a real nanar. It was still directed by one of the greatest directors in the world: James Cameron. As a reminder, this is the man behind cult films such as Aliens, Avatar, but also Titanic. As its name suggests, Piranha 2: The Flying Killers (in French) is the sequel to the feature film Piranhas, directed by Joe Dante (Gremlins 2: The New Batch) in 1978. In the first part, we find a couple of hikers infiltrating a former military domain. They find a swimming pool there. But while they are bathing in it, they are devoured by piranhas. It is finally another duo who will have the heavy task of discovering what happened. However, our heroes are intercepted by a scientist who threatens to release the man-eating fish into a very touristy lake. In the second opus, viewers quickly realize that the problem has never been resolved despite the efforts of our protagonists.
A critical failure
While the first Piranha was a real critical success, with a score of 70% on Rotten Tomatoes, its sequel completely sank. “Despite the unintended humor of ultimate organism-farming biochemistry, leading to a frenzied beachside bloodbath, the film’s sloppy construction is unforgivable,” remarked one American reviewer. Note that for his film, James Cameron had very little budget, which played against him. “Fortunately, James Cameron has moved on to bigger and better things,” another journalist ironically points out. Finally, it seems that since this experience, the filmmaker wants to deny Piranha 2. The man often speaks of Terminator as his first feature film, although it was only shot two years later.
