As the release of Equalizer 3 is imminent, its director is considering proposing an origin story… by digitally rejuvenating Denzel Washington. However, two major elements could prevent the realization of such a project, which is easier said than done.
Towards a fourth Equalizer?
For several years, Hollywood has made a habit of digitally rejuvenating its actors through special effects. Recently, this had been the case with Harrison Ford in the last Indiana Jones, The Dial of Destiny. However, the phenomenon is not new, because we remember that Disney had already tried the experiment in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story by offering digitized versions of Princess Leia and Grand Moff Tarkin from the performance of two real actors. But today, it would be Denzel Washington’s turn to lend himself to the experienceaccording to the words of the director of the Equalizer saga.
As part of the Equalizer 3 promotion scheduled for August 30, Antoine Fuqua responded to an interview with the NME site. During the interview, he explains his thoughts on digitally rejuvenating Denzel Washington to come up with a potential origin story of his character in Equalizer, Robert McCall:
“I’ve thought about it a lot. Especially today, with new technologies, artificial intelligence and all that kind of stuff… Is there a story to tell about how Robert McCall became this nobody, but in a younger version? I had this conversation with Richard Wenk (the screenwriter who co-wrote the three Equalizer films). – Antoine Fuqua
However, he quickly recognizes that it is only a thought and thathe hasn’t spoken to Denzel Washington about it yet who might be less enthusiastic about this idea. He explains :
Everything is so fresh and so new. I am always observing these new technologies. I watched the Harrison Ford movie and I know more movies are coming out. I believe that Sony will soon release a film of this genre with Tom Hanks (Here by Robert Zemeckis). And I heard that the technology is getting better and better. So I’m watching the situation to see where it’s evolving. – Antoine Fuqua
A very expensive technology
Beyond the actor’s response to this proposal, another element could prevent this project from seeing the light of day: the price of this technology. In most of the films mentioned above, rejuvenating an actor is only done for the duration of a scene or a sequence, but no more, because it requires a huge budget in special effects. If we take the example of The Irishman, the Scorcese film produced by Netflix, the latter had cost more than 200 million dollars, a good part of which was devoted to special effects to rejuvenate Robert de Niro, Joe Pesci and Al Pacino. Same thing for Indiana Jones 5 which cost Disney 295 million. In any case, before imagining a fourth part of the saga, we remind you that‘Equalizer is scheduled for August 30 at the cinema.
