After the success of the series adaptation of The Last of Us, the creator of the series discussed potential spin-offs.
Soon spin-offs for The Last of Us series? Whether it’s Craig Mazin, the director of the series, or even certain actors, potential TV shows parallel to the main plot are possible. During an interview granted to the media The Wrap, the filmmaker indeed mentioned this desire :
I am not opposed to the idea of other series which could be inspired by these characters or this world (…). If there was something that would make sense, I don’t see why we wouldn’t.
Merle Dandridge, the actress of Marlene, offered to stage the backgrounds of several characters, including her own. “I think every facet of this world offers the opportunity to go a little deeper,” she told The Wrap. Another star would also be ready to return to the universe of The Last of Us. This is Melanie Lynskey, the interpreter of the antagonist Kathleen. The actress admits to Variety that it would be interesting to tell her story:
If they wanted to go back and do an origin story, I’d be there for it. The story of how (Kathleen, editor’s note) ended up in this crazy position would be really interesting.
A delayed season 2
Released in January 2023, the first season of The Last of Us adapts the first installment of the eponymous game. The work reveals a post-apocalyptic world infested with zombies. The plot follows two characters: Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Balla Ramsey) who try to survive in order to discover the cure that is the young girl. The second season was announced shortly after the first part episodes aired. However, the writers’ and actors’ strike has an impact on the project. While Franscesca Orsi, who oversees HBO’s programs, said that season 2 should be broadcast in 2025, Craig Mazin, the director, had mentioned a delay in production: “I think we are almost certain that we will not we won’t be able to start filming the second part of The Last of Us on the date we were hoping for” he confessed to the media Entertainment Weekly.
