CD Projekt RED talks about the reason why there will only be one expansion for Cyberpunk 2077.
The Phantom Liberty expansion will launch on September 26th for Cyberpunk 2077 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC. As is well known, it is the only major additional content for the open-world action game. There won’t be any more.
Michał Nowakowski spoke about the reason why there will be no further DLC for the game. So it has nothing to do with sales figures or criticism of the game. It’s a purely technical reason.
“The decision has actually already been made, we announced it for a long time. We will not do a second or third expansion. This is the game’s only expansion. It has nothing to do with the numbers or how happy or unhappy we are with the sales or anything like that. It’s a technological decision to be honest. This is the last time we’ll be working with the RED Engine, for now. At least for the foreseeable future, as you know, we’re running Epic’s Unreal Engine, and that was one of the main reasons we decided it was the only one.”
So even if Phantom Liberty were a commercial success, no other expansion would be produced.
At Gamescom, game director Gabe Amatangelo talked about Phantom Liberty and what new features are being added.
