In 2013, Scarlett Johansson experienced one of the worst projections of her life. An anecdote told by Alberto Barbera, artistic director of the Venice festival.
In an interview with The Guardian, Alberto Barbera, artistic director of the Venice Film Festival, shared a slew of anecdotes about the film stars he had the opportunity to meet during his career. One of them concerns Scarlett Johansson, who, in 2013, was promoting her new film Under the Skin, which received a very spicy reception. “It was one of the worst screenings I’ve ever been to; it was the only time the audience booed a film,” he recalls.
“Scarlett was almost in tears. I tried to tell her, ‘Don’t worry, in time the film will be recognized.’ And that’s exactly what happened. It’s today a cult movie. (It was named the best British film of the 21st century by a critics’ poll) – The Guardian.
Johansson now has a long career behind her. Revealed by her collaborations with renowned American filmmakers such as Robert Redford, Sofia Coppola and Woody Allen, it is above all her participation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Black Widow which really popularized the actress among the general public. After filming in the first Avengers in 2012, she decided to take part in a more minimalist project by Jonathan Glazer. She plays the role of Laura, an extra-terrestrial who seeks to seduce men to recover their bodily envelope.
A resounding failure
As you will have understood, Under the Skin was a resounding failure at the box office. With a budget of around 13 million dollars, the feature film collected just over 6 million in total. The film still won three prizes at the British Independent Film Award in 2013: best actress, best director and best technician. The Rotten Tomatoes score climbs today to 84% on the press side, which agrees on the following consensus: “Its message may seem elusive to some, but with absorbing imagery and a hypnotic performance by Scarlett Johansson, Under the Skin is a haunting viewing experience.”
