Exactly 25 years ago, on September 3, 1998, the first Metal Gear Solid was released on the original PlayStation. In honor of this event, designer Hideo Kojima recalled how he created the game:
MGS1 was a big turning point for me. It was released worldwide on major PlayStation consoles, but the production process also changed significantly. Up until this point, I had been involved in planning, scriptwriting, game design, and even directing, but my bosses were in charge of production. There was no authority to make decisions about platforms, budgets, release dates, promotions, staffing, third-party writers, etc. When is the best time to sell? How to sell? I couldn’t be in charge either. Before the release of “SNATCHER” there was an advertisement that said that Lisa was a thief. At that time, you couldn’t choose teams or platforms or rely on external creators. In 1996, I was able to open a production branch in Ebisu and participate in its management. This gave me the opportunity to manage and control budgets, development plans, recruitment, promotions, etc. in the author’s key. MGS1 is the first work I created as a real author..
Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection – a collection of the first three games in the series – is currently being released for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Nintendo Switch and is scheduled for release on October 24th this year, so now is the time to revisit the experience Metal Gear Solid or try playing it for the first time.
