There are many characters from ultra-famous franchises that will be remembered by the film industry. From Darth Vader to Iron Man, several actors will remain in the minds of many for their enormous charisma and importance in popular culture, but there is one character in particular that will be unforgettable for any fan of The Lord of the Rings: the Gandalf by Ian McKellen.
However, McKellen was not the first choice to become one of the most powerful magicians in the entire trilogy. Speaking to Variety, the British actor commented on this situation, mentioning that two much-loved Hollywood actors were prioritized before him.
“I certainly wasn’t the first choice for Gandalf. Tony Hopkins turned him down. Sean Connery certainly did. Now they’re all coming out of nowhere, and I hope they feel stupid.”
Almost anyone who has seen the Peter Jackson trilogy agrees that the actor was born to be Gandalf. McKellen is responsible for some of the most memorable moments in this saga, giving Frodo wisdom and leaving phrases and expressions to remember.
It would have been very interesting to see how actors of the caliber of Anthony Hopkins y Sean Connery they would have played this powerful magician, especially Sean Connery, who sadly left us a few years ago and whose legacy within the film industry will be memorable.
