September 10, 2023 at 4:15 p.m. by Valentin Sattler – After Jean-Claude Van Damme was actually supposed to be part of the first Mortal Kombat, he is now at least included in the reboot of the series. However, the appropriate skin will only be available to buyers of the expensive Premium Edition.
When development of the first Mortal Kombat was considered in 1991, the game was actually intended to feature martial artist and actor Jean-Claude Van Damme. After the developers were unable to convince Van Damme of the project, the fighting game instead – as a loose imitation – based on the fictional character Johnny Cage. Now, 32 years later, Van Damme is finally set to appear in a Mortal Kombat.
Reboot with Van Damme
Yesterday, the developers of the upcoming series reboot Mortal Kombat 1 released a trailer that introduces Jean-Claude Van Damme as part of the game. Accordingly, there will be a suitable skin for Johnny Cage with which he can slip into Van Damme’s role and take apart his opponents. The game’s star cast continues to grow after Megan Fox was recently announced as a voice actress.

However, there is a catch with the Van Damme skin for buyers of the game, as it will not be available for all players. Instead, it is part of the Premium Edition, which is sold on Steam for 95 euros instead of 70 euros. Since numerous mods have already been released for Mortal Kombat 11, there will probably also be appropriate community extensions for Mortal Kombat 1 – which may then also make the skin available for the standard edition.

At least if you want to try out Jean-Claude Van Damme in Mortal Kombat 1 when it releases on September 19th, you will hardly be able to avoid buying the Premium Edition. On the other hand, you should have enough characters to try out at launch to bridge the waiting time for community solutions.
