This mini-series, already available on Netflix, was nominated for an Oscar and is the pride of Norway. Perfect viewing for a weekend!
The number of programs available on Netflix is so large that it is obvious that we are missing out on gems without knowing it. This is surely the case with The Foam of War, a three-episode mini-series with a total duration of 175 minutes directed by Gunnar Vikene. Initially, the three parts constituted one and the same film, the platform judged that it would be more digestible that way. So some sequences were added and others cut to fit the format. This Norwegian show was nominated for an Oscar and has very positive reviews. It is the most expensive production ever made by Norway, which makes it a source of local pride! As its name suggests, the film will appeal to fans of war stories.
A story of wartime survival
The story features two friends who join the navy. However, a major conflict broke out during their years of service: the Second World War. The two men then find themselves embroiled in a war in which they would never have wanted to get involved. A story of survival which is also an ode to peace. All the negative feelings that this conflict can inspire are brought to the fore. Between family separation, loneliness, exacerbated violence, moral cases, etc. the series confronts us with the violence of these conflicts which put the determination of these two men to the test.
Pørni, Vikene’s other series
Gunnar Vikene, its director, has other poignant programs to his credit. We can cite Pørni, a social drama. The story of a social worker, mother of two teenagers, who tries to do the best for her family and for herself. However, she must also deal with the grief of a deceased sister, her neurotic father who lives with her and the immaturity of an ex-husband whom she must cover. Vikene’s creations are aimed at an audience that loves films and series that deviate from the classic Hollywood model, because they paint a harsh and sometimes pessimistic reality.
