September 16th, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. by Jonathan Harsch – With Paper Mario: The Legend of the Aeon Gate, one of the best role-playing games of all time is released for the Nintendo Switch. However, there is apparently a big catch because the title only seems to run at 30 FPS – on the Gamecube it was still 60 FPS.
Paper Mario: The Legend of the Aeon Gate is the best role-playing game ever developed by Nintendo. It is the highlight of the series that every new offshoot has to (unsuccessfully) compete with. Some even consider it one of the best RPGs of all time. Fans were correspondingly euphoric when the title was announced for the Switch during Nintendo Direct this week. After the first wave of hype has subsided, a bit of disillusionment is now setting in.
Paper Mario: The Legend of the Aeon Gate runs at halved FPS on the Switch
Paper Mario: The Legend of the Aeon Gate (Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door) is a remaster of a Gamecube game. On the Switch, the title not only scores with HD upscaling, but also with revised character and item models. However, as the Nintendo World Report portal analyzes, these improvements come with a big catch. While the RPG ran at 60 FPS on the Gamecube, it only seems to run at 30 FPS on the Switch.

Further news on the topic:
Since Paper Mario: The Legend of the Aeon Gate won’t be released until 2024, there’s of course still enough time for that to change. The question, however, is whether Nintendo will do that or whether the Switch is even capable of doing so. The solution could be Switch 2. Apparently a successor console will be released next year that will even run Zelda: Breath of the Wild at 60 FPS. It is quite likely that Nintendo will release the Paper Mario remaster for the new platform – and then perhaps with better technology.
