September 17th, 2023 at 12:30 p.m. by Valentin Sattler – With the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max, you should be able to record 3D videos for the first time that can be played on Apple’s Vision Pro. However, the feature will not be available at launch. Instead, it will be submitted via an update by the end of the year.
At the beginning of next year, Apple finally wants to bring the long-announced VR/AR headset Vision Pro onto the market in the USA. The preparations for this also affect the recently introduced iPhones, as the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max apparently receive a feature specifically for the Vision Pro.
Films with depth
According to Apple, it will be possible to record 3D videos for the first time with the top iPhone models. In the corresponding announcement, the company says that a corresponding software update should be released by the end of the year. There is no mention of 3D photos, but these will probably also be able to be created from then on.
“Later this year, an update to the iPhone 15 Pro will enable a new dimension in video recording: spatial video recording for Apple Vision Pro.”
The shot with a depth effect is intended to be created through the interaction of the main and ultra-wide camera, which can observe the scenery from slightly different positions and thereby create the 3D effect. However, it is unclear how good this effect will actually be in the end. In addition, Apple has not yet commented on the format of the 3D recordings.

For the time being, it remains unclear whether the 3D photos and 3D videos taken with the iPhone 15 Pro (Max) can also be played with other VR headsets, or whether Apple is planning a proprietary video format for the Vision Pro. It would be desirable to have an open approach so that the recordings could be distributed more widely. Because that would pave the way for another 3D hype like the one that existed a good ten years ago.
