Back in May 2021, the future of the Dragon Quest franchise was revealed, with several new games announced such as Dragon Quest Treasures, Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate, and an HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest 3. Dragon Quest Treasures is available for Nintendo Switch ( and recently on PC), and last year the team revealed that it was hard at work on the next main game.
As for the HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest 3, series creator Yuji Horii recently told Famitsu at the World Cosplay Summit 2023 that development is “progressing pretty steadily.” Regarding his involvement in the development of the remake, Horii said:
“For Dragon Quest 3, I’ve already made the game once and know a lot about it, so I’ll give advice along the lines of, ‘If you want to change it, you should do it this way.’
While the team is working on “various things,” Horii unfortunately hasn’t provided any information about Dragon Quest 12. “As for Dragon Quest 12, I can’t say much yet.”
AMATA K.K. and the Asano team are developing an HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest 3, using the Octopath Traveler engine to create stunning new visuals. The game’s platforms other than “home consoles” have yet to be announced, although it is scheduled to launch simultaneously worldwide.
