Update (09/20/2023) – MR
The first trailer for the Netflix anime based on Onimusha was released by the company itself on its official channels. The production had been announced last year, but had not received any news until now.
The series will be available to subscribers at November 2nd and will focus on the character Musashi Miyamoto, present in Onimusha: Blade Warriors, a fighting derivative of the saga.
Onimusha will be directed by Takashi Miike, the experienced and controversial filmmaker known for producing films with extremely high levels of violence. His resume includes works such as Audition, Ichi the Killer, Blade of the Immortal and Gozu, as well as the adaptation of Ace Attorney in 2012.
Musashi will have an appearance based on Toshiro Mifune, one of the most famous Japanese actors of all time who starred in several Akira Kurosawa films, such as “The Seven Samurai” and “Rashomon”.
According to Netflix, Onimusha will be an intense series with lots of action in which Musashi will use his sword to destroy evil while crossing a land devastated by poverty. The streaming giant promises cutting-edge technology with 3D CGI and hand-drawn sets for incredible visuals.
The synopsis reveals that the series will take place at the beginning of the Edo period and will feature Musashi with the Oni Gautlet on a journey to defeat the fearsome Genma.
Onimusha is a game franchise created by Capcom that debuted in 2001 with Onimisha: Warlords. In 2019, the company launched the remaster of the title with improved graphics, improved controls and new accessibility options.

Netflix has revealed the first images of an anime that will adapt Onimusha, Capcom’s classic game franchise.
Takashi Miike and Shinya Sugai from Sublimation (Dragon’s Dogma) are responsible for the animation, with Musashi Miyamoto having a model based on Toshiro Mifune, the famous Japanese actor responsible for playing samurai.
Netflix did not reveal a release date, but provided a brief synopsis about the series.
“At the beginning of the Edo period, Musashi is no longer a young man. He sets off with the legendary Oni Gauntlet to face Genma.
3D CGI characters and hand-drawn backgrounds will create phenomenal scenery. Onimusha will gain new life using modern technology.”
The Onimusha franchise was created by Capcom, with the first game in the series, Onimusha: Warlords, being released in 2001. The second game, Samurai’s Destiny, was released in 2002, while the third, Demon Siege arrived in 2004.
Planned as a trilogy, Onimusha gained a new title in 2006 called Dawn of Dreams. Despite a good reception from critics and the public, the game did not sell well and the franchise ended up being sidelined for years.
In 2019, Capcom released the remaster of the first game. In addition to improved graphics, it featured improved controls and new accessibility options.
The franchise features historical figures and battles from Japan, with the first titles being based on the Sengoku period and combining action with adventure.
