THE Mortal Kombat 1 fighters could have had much more recognizable facesif Ed Boon’s idea had gone through to the end…
Megan Fox and JCVD in the latest Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat 1 marked the return of the series with a “timeline reboot” in 2011, also introducing new gameplay elements. One of the most notable aspects of the game was the inclusion of celebrities as fighters. From its beginnings, Mortal Kombat offered digitized actors, it is therefore a form of return to the sources, but originally these actors were not necessarily stars. However, in Mortal Kombat 1, we find Megan Fox, who lent her voice to Nitara. And Johnny Cage’s skin was also inspired by Jean-Claude Van Dammeicon of 90s action films which themselves inspired the Mortal Kombat franchise.
The initial idea: only stars!
However, Ed Boon, the co-creator of the series, had a even more ambitious vision for Mortal Kombat 1. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Ed Boon revealed that he had considered not include Hollywood stars in the game, “without even thinking about their salaries and that kind of thing”, for each of the fighters. For example, he considered Keanu Reeves as Kenshi. If it wasn’t for playing Kenshi, Ed Boon also explains that they really tried to integrate the character John Wick into Mortal Kombat, but without success. This idea, that each fighter be played by a star, would have been a real tour de force, but Boon quickly realized that budgetary constraints and the availability of actors made this ambition impossible. to achieve. Furthermore, he emphasized that many actors do not always understand the complexity of dubbing for video games, where hundreds of lines of dialogue must be recorded. Some people expect that a single day of work in the recording studio and a scan of their face will be enough, but they are far from it!
Three well-known heroes arrive in Mortal Kombat 1
Although the idea of a Mortal Kombat 1 with famous actors may seem appealing, the experience is not always satisfactory. Since the game’s release yesterday, players have found, for example, that la performance de Megan Fox (who did not do all of Nitara’s lines, some of which are performed by voice actress Cristina Valenzuela) is quite disappointing in-game, calling it bland and emotionless. Additionally, fans are often attached to the original voices of the charactersand the celebrity casting can sometimes distract from the core essence of the game. We know, however, that Omni-Man (Invincible), Homelander (The Boys) et Peacemaker (from the eponymous series) will soon join the roster of Mortal Kombat 1 fighters in a DLC. Perhaps in future additional content, John Wick will end up joining the roster too!
Mortal Kombat 1 is available on PC, PS5, Xbox Series and Nintendo Switch.
