In an official press release, Shimano announces that it has launched a major recall campaign in Europe, and incidentally in the United States and Canada. The cause: a defective pedal system, with a real risk of separation or lamination.

Shimano is probably the most famous manufacturer of drivetrains and other bicycle components in the world. Unfortunately, one of its parts has been officially deemed defective, and is thus the subject of a massive recall campaign. This is the HOLLOWTECH II crank system.
As Bike Radar tells us, more than 760,000 cranksets are affected in the United States and Canada. This recall was issued after more than 4,000 incidents resulting in six injuries, including bone fractures and joint displacements. The fault is a pure separation of the crank, an extremely dangerous failure.
In Europe, no figures regarding the number of affected cranksets have been communicated.
Which cranksets are recalled?
A press release for Europe was published on September 22, 2023. Here are the crankset models affected by this recall. These are versions mainly intended for road bikes. Two ranges are concerned, the Ultegra and Dura-Ace 11-speed.
ULTEGRA FC-6800 ;
DURA-ACE FC-9000 ;
ULTEGRA FC-R8000 ;
DURA-ACE FC-R9100 ;
DURA-ACE FC-R9100-P.
Important information: not all Ultegra and Dura-Ace cranksets are necessarily affected. Only models produced between January 1, 2012 and June 30, 2019 are. For these, it is imperative to have them inspected.

How do you know if your pedal board is affected?
To check if your crankset is affected by this recall, you must first know the model number of your crankset. This number is located inside the crank. “If the number matches that of an Ultegra and Dura-Ace model, then you must identify the manufacturing code printed on your crank,” it says.

If your crank has one of its manufacturing codes, then you should contact an authorized Shimano dealer to schedule a free inspection. This inspection will determine whether or not a risk of separation or delamination is truly present. If this is the case, the part will be replaced free of charge by a professional.
