Tesla revealed the number of employees it has at Gigafactory Texas. The rates are so high that they make the automaker one of the largest employers in Central Texas, and it’s just the beginning.
Tesla Gigafactory: number of employees is impressive!
Jason Shawhan, Tesla’s director of manufacturing at Giga Texas, revealed the numbers in a presentation reported by the Austin Business Journal. According to the official, Tesla had more than 12,000 employees at Gigafactory Texas at the end of last year. It has now grown to more than 20,000 employees in the Austin area this year, with the majority of them located at Gigafactory Texas.
But the most incredible claim is that Tesla expects to increase to 60,000 employees when it has fully ramped up Cybertruck production at Gigafactory Texas.
Tesla is already the second-largest corporate employer in Central Texas, behind only the popular local grocery chain HEB.
This hiring spree for 60,000 workers would put it at the top.
Tesla is preparing for the hiring surge by building a giant parking lot on site. Therefore, the car manufacturer will have to considerably increase local infrastructure to support this type of growth in the number of employees.
Although Tesla is known for its large factories with extraordinarily high headcount, 60,000 employees would be a whole new level. Same for the car manufacturer.
But Giga Texas is unique in the sense that Tesla is trying to build much more than just electric vehicles at the factory.
Tesla is also building battery cells and even cathode material at the factory. I remind you that manufacturing normally takes place in its own separate factories.
Meanwhile, as we had already reported based on information from suppliers, Tesla intends to produce 375,000 Cybertrucks per year at Giga Texas. By the time it has reached this production capacity, the car manufacturer is expected to have also started production of its next generation vehicles, which should also contribute to the incredible employee numbers.
